Douglas Gordon
24 Hour Psycho
1993
24 hour psycho is a slowed down version of Alfred Hitchcock's 1960s film Psycho, although I was unable to watch the whole of Douglas Gordon's film '24 hour psycho' I was able to see a very small clip of it. The small section I saw, alone were very powerful.

The clip had no sound and it left alot to the imagination creating mystery and tension. I thought the use of black and white stopped you being distracted away from what was actually going on. Any movement in the film was very subtle, it was not gory in any way but the use of strong shadows and highly tonal lighting made it more of a horror. It is filmed from an over lookers perspective. I feel the use of film allows the story to be captured really well. As the clip goes on you start to become totally engrossed in what the woman is doing, it starts to almost feel like you are experiencing what she is. I feel this is a key to a visual being successful, whether its an image on a film. The ability to capture an audience and control their emotions is incredibly powerful and allows you to create a sense of horror with in the atmosphere. This is something I want to create within my final images, I feel the key to doing this effectively will be in producing strong images that are able to communicate a story line.
